On Easter lunch I sat next to a man who seemed to be quite a bit older than me because during lunch a fly kept going in and out of his mouth and he didn’t seem to notice which was really perplexing to me. I couldn’t follow the conversation because I wanted to follow the fly.I was imagining how that would feel on my own face and lip. Maybe when you get to be a certain age flies coming in and out of your mouth are normal.. Maybe you’re happy to have the fly go in there and do something positive like kill bacteria.Maybe you are happy to have your bicuspids reviewed.
When I was a child, there was a large rock in our backyard and on many occasions, I tried to dig it up and make it roll.I mean it was a big boulder, but I was very worried that maybe our version of Jesus Christ wasn’t accurate and that he was still in a cave behind a rock. I thought quite carefully that if I pushed really hard, I could manage to let him out. I thought if he came out, he might be fun to play with. He seemed to have all these magic powers. I particularly liked his power, multiplying one loaf into a dozen loaves of bread. We never were allowed to have bread in our house.
Easter Sunday is a strange day. There are a lot of red shoes on women and little girls. I have no idea why. And if Christ is risen, why don’t we see that like the rocket going up in the sky. And where does he rise too. Is there a platform up there someplace we can’t see that either.
I was always looking for places to hide as a child so the concept of a platform in the sky seemed great. The perfect dancer to the need to remove myself from life.
I’ve been looking for a sanctuary all of my life. I go into churches, even when there’s a service happening and sit in the back and act as if I’m just a fly on the wall. You can see I have a very big interest in flies. The trouble is I’m allergic to incense. I also seem to be allergic to liturgy. I would like very much to hear someone go up to the pulpit and announce that the world was going to be reborn and when we woke up tomorrow morning, everything would be back the way it was in 1950 only all the good inventions would still be around. I was happy to hear that because that would mean I could wear beautiful dresses with flowers on them and very red lips and vacuum my house while in this costume.
